Artist statement
Yingchao is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice focuses on installation art and painting, with a thematic emphasis on liminality, cultural identity, and the interplay between industrialization and social structures. His work seeks to explore transitional states and the spaces in between, often reflecting on how personal and collective identities are shaped by societal shifts.
In recent projects, Yingchao has reimagined traditional landscape painting through a contemporary lens, blending historical techniques with modern perspectives. His innovative approach to materials is central to his practice—he frequently works with discarded, mass-produced objects, which he repurposes to explore themes of erasure and transformation. These objects, once marked for disposal, are collectively painted or altered, erasing their individual characteristics and questioning notions of ownership and value. This process of reconstruction not only alters the meaning of the objects but also invites viewers to contemplate the cycle of creation, destruction, and rebirth in both material and conceptual terms.
Yingchao holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from OCAD University, where he majored in Drawing & Painting and minored in Art History. He has also completed a Master of Fine Arts degree from Chelsea College of Art. His work has been exhibited in a variety of settings, from corporate spaces, where he has completed commissions for companies such as Sun Life, to private clubs in Toronto, where he has curated exhibitions featuring works by Asian and minority artists.
